Our whole school theme for the Summer term is 'Knock knock' and our essential question is 'What makes a jungle a home?'.
Our immersive classroom has been transformed into a jungle complete with waterfall, reading cave and Monkey Den; a special member of our class lives here... Little Monkey!
The Early Years Foundation Stage has 7 areas of learning.
Here is what we will be covering in the Summer term:
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
We will be completing team challenges, playing group games with rules and presenting our learning in groups to further develop our confidence. We will learn about bravery and resilience linking to our story 'Little Monkey' and solve problems independently by thinking of our own ideas and fair solutions.
Communication and Language
We will develop class stories using story maps and story mountains, give and respond to feedback using critique, answer how and why questions and extend our vocabulary through non-fiction jungle texts. We will also liaise with customers at our exhibition at the end of our project.
Physical Development
We will be moving confidently in a range of ways, handling tools and equipment correctly, forming letters using the cursive script and controlling letter size by writing on lines. We will take part in our first Bottesford Infants Sports Day and use sewing to further develop our fine motor control. We will learn more about the importance of keeping fit and healthy, learn about portion sizes through the Get Ahead programme 'Portion Wise' and prepare food and drinks for our exhibition.
Literacy
We will further develop our phonic knowledge and reading in Read Write Inc. and Guided Reading. We will further develop our sentence writing in Guided Writing and will use story maps and mountains to develop and write stories. We will also share stories with our Reading buddies throughout the term.
Mathematics
We will further develop our calculation skills including addition, subtraction and number bonds to 10 using practical equipment, number lines and word problems. We will count in 2's, 5's and 10's and use these skills when solving practical problems. We will double and halve numbers, develop our estimating skills and measure using length and weight.
Understanding the World
We will deepen our knowledge of jungle animals including monkeys, tigers, frogs, caterpillars, butterflies and spiders. We will learn about jungle habitats and deforestation before deciding how we can help. We will use Dash, QR codes and various apps to enhance our learning.
Expressive Arts and Design
We will experiment with new techniques and media to create jungle creatures and minibeasts. We will create lots of items for our exhibition including jungle magnets and keyrings.
Key books for the term ahead include Little Monkey, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Walking Through the Jungle, Monkey Puzzle and The Very Busy Spider. We will also read lots of non-fiction books linking to our project.
Little Monkey will use Monkey Mail to send us lots of challenges throughout the term.
If you have any questions or would like to speak to a member of staff in Red class please find us at the end of the school day. Alternatively, our learning mentor Mrs Holmes is available on the playground in the mornings.
