Intent

At Bottesford Infant School, we aim for every child to develop a deep understanding, appreciation, and love of music during their time with us. We believe that music should be an active, engaging, and empowering experience that inspires creativity, self-expression, and confidence in all learners.

Our music curriculum is delivered through the Sing Up Music Programme, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive framework for musical learning. Through this curriculum, children develop their understanding of the key musical concepts of pitch, pulse, rhythm, and tempo, revisiting these regularly to deepen their knowledge and build secure musical skills over time.

We are passionate about ensuring that children experience music in a wide variety of ways. Pupils are given opportunities to sing, perform, compose, listen, and respond to music from an early age, developing both their musical understanding and enjoyment. Singing is embedded throughout daily school life, enabling children to use their voices confidently and expressively from their first days in school.

We strive to broaden pupils’ musical horizons by providing access to a diverse range of musicians, genres, cultures, and musical traditions through both live and recorded performances. Children learn about musicians from different time periods and backgrounds, including artists with local significance, helping them to understand music’s place within their own community and the wider world.

We are committed to providing opportunities for instrumental learning and encouraging children to develop a lifelong interest in music. Through listening, performing, composing, and appraising, pupils are supported to form their own musical preferences and are encouraged to express thoughtful opinions and critiques about the music they encounter. By the time they leave Bottesford Infant School, we want every child to view themselves as a musician and to have developed a lasting appreciation of the power and enjoyment of music.
