Tall Oaks From Little Acorns Grow

Welcome to our page! The class teacher in Red class is Miss Watson. Mrs Brand is the full time teaching assistant. Mrs Arrand is also a teaching assistant in class too on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. Our PE days this term are Monday and Friday. Please bring PE kits into school on a Monday and we will send them home on a Friday. Reading books will be changed on a Wednesday. Please remember to sign your child's reading diary when you have shared their books with them. Homework books will be sent home every Friday and collected in on a Wednesday too. Thank you!

Our whole school theme is 'Beautiful Britain' and our essential question is 'What is Britain without bees?'. Our immersive classroom supports this theme and has been transformed into the countryside! It includes a picnic area, camping area, Beekeeper's Cottage and beehive zone. As part of our project we will be learning about different minibeasts with a focus on bees. We will be learning about how they make honey and how we can help them.

 

Our story focus is 'The Bumblebear' but we will also be learning about Eric Carle and some of his wonderful minibeast stories including 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'The Bad-Tempered Ladybird'.

Here is what we will be covering in the Spring term:

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We will be developing our understanding of the school values with a focus on Communication and Achievement, developing our turn taking, sharing, negotiating and problem solving skills, developing our independence during both self-initiated and adult-directed activities as we choose where and how we will learn and confidently sharing our home experiences during our weekly Tapestry time.

Communication and Language

We will be learning how to be good communicators, using story maps to retell stories and events with actions, acting out familiar stories, using story mountains to develop our storytelling language and listening to stories and asking/answering questions about the characters and events in the story.

Physical Development

We will be developing our control and co-ordination in all movements, handling tools safely and effectively, developing our fine motor control and handwriting using the cursive script, developing our understanding of the importance of exercise and a healthy diet, and developing our skipping with the skip4life programme from the ‘Let’s Get Ahead’ partnership.

Literacy

We will be developing our phonic knowledge using Read Write Inc., developing our knowledge of tricky red words, reading words and simple sentences, writing words and simple sentences, using story mountains to develop our story writing and storytelling language, and learning about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. We will have guided reading and guided writing sessions to develop our Literacy skills.

Mathematics

In Number we will be learning to recognise and order numbers to 20 and beyond, say the number that is one/two more/less than a given number, add and subtract and count in 10’s and 5’s. In Shape, Space and Measure we will be learning about time, money, repeating and symmetrical patterns, recognising and describing 2d and 3d shapes and how to measure using non-standard measures.

Understanding the World

We will be developing our computing and programming skills using iPads, beebots and QR codes, learning about how to keep safe online, developing our knowledge of bees and other minibeasts, the British countryside, beekeepers and how honey is made. We will also be learning how to grow plants and which plants to grow to help the British bees.

Expressive Arts and Design

We will be experimenting with new techniques including paper mache and colour mixing, making minibeasts models and artwork, experimenting with different media and materials and developing music and dance inspired by bees.

 

If you need to speak to the staff in red class please catch us at the end of the school day. Alternatively, our learning mentor Mrs Holmes is available on the playground in the mornings.
